Understanding ETPs.

ETFs, ETCs and ETNs explained properly: how they work, how they differ, what they really cost and how the Italian tax system treats them. An independent guide for investors.

ETPs — the exchange-traded products that track an index, a commodity or a currency — have become the most widely used building block in investors’ portfolios: worldwide they are worth more than twenty-four trillion dollars. And yet, behind three similar acronyms (ETF, ETC, ETN) lie instruments that differ profoundly in legal nature, in risks and in tax treatment.

This guide was written to close that gap: to explain in plain English, taking nothing for granted, what you actually buy when you buy an ETP, how the engine that keeps it tied to its index works, which costs you see and which you don’t, and what happens when the moment comes to settle up with the Italian tax authorities.

It is an independent guide: it promotes no product, names no issuer and is no substitute for personal advice. It provides the foundations — the ones every investor should have before deciding.

Inside

What ETPs are and who the three family members are: ETF funds, ETC securities on commodities, ETN notes. The differences that matter — and the special instruments to handle with care.

The mechanism that keeps an ETP tied to its index, the practice of buying on the exchange and the costs — visible and invisible — that decide the long-run result.

The risks to know, the strategies for using these instruments well and the Italian tax treatment. With the final glossary, for every word that gives you pause.
